TerraLogic Power “The Iron Butt Rally !
The Iron Butt Rally (www.ironbutt.com) is an 11,000+ mile motorcycle adventure across the USA and Canada – a true test of endurance for men, women and machines.
Cardiff Bay based ruggedised computer company TerraLogic were approached earlier this year by Canadian biker Peter Hoogeveen, a veteran of this amazing challenge to provide a computer capable of surviving the rally and aiding him in his pursuit of a 5th top ten finish.
The model chosen was the Toughnote? DI-5 ruggedised tablet computer – the combination of power, size, functionality and level of ruggedisation being the main deciding factors. Says Peter : “The DI-5 performed incredibly well. I used it for everything from route planning, GPS locating, adjusting the fuel mixture on the bike, even entertainment.
“As the rally progressed I relied on the routing software and the DI-5 more and more. I can't tell you the help it was navigating to Battery Park in downtown New York City in the middle of the morning rush hour and finding shortcuts through the Western Canadian wilderness. I was able to do the entire rally, traveling all over the United States and Canada without opening a paper map, I believe that this was the first time this has been accomplished. When faced with places where gas stations are few and far between I used the interface to re-map the fuel injection system and lean out the mixture to conserve fuel when the distances between open gas stations was further than I anticipated, I am sure I saved crucial hours of sitting beside the road waiting for someone with some spare gas.

"The DI-5 survived the brutal heat and dust of the Mojave Desert, blasting zones in the Rocky Mountains and the punishment of New York City roads, without even a hiccup. I am glad I could rely on it for so much during the grueling 11 day Iron Butt Rally. Peter eventually finished the 11,493 miles of the rally in just 11 days, finishing in 5th place. TerraLogic MD, Ken Gray, commented “The DI-5 is an amazing little unit offering full Windows capabilities in a form factor small enough to be carried anywhere. So far it has mainly been used by emergency services, surveying companies, airlines and utilities, but Peter’s experiences show just how flexible and robust the system is. It is capable of handling the most demanding multi-tasking functions and environmental conditions – vibration, heat, cold, wind and rain with ease. And Peter didn’t do too badly either !
